Hammerhead at Gordo Banks

4th October

Dive 1 – Gordo 2 (Outer Bank):
Our first dive of the day was at the outer bank of Gordo 2. We hit a noticeable thermocline at around 80 feet, where the temperature dropped to 74°F. Above the thermocline, the conditions were fantastic—visibility was at least 90 feet, and the water was warm and clear. Throughout the dive, we were treated to the thrilling sight of tons of hammerhead sharks, making it an unforgettable experience from start to finish!

Dive 2:
The second dive had a thermocline slightly shallower, at about 70 feet. Though there were fewer hammerheads, we still encountered some incredible marine life. We spotted a tope shark and a couple of graceful rays gliding through the water.

Diving Conditions

 

    • Visibility at least 90 ft at shallower depths, warm water

    • Thermocline at 80 ft, water temp dropping to 74 F

8th October

Dive 1 – Gordo 2 (Outside):
We started our day at the outer section of Gordo Banks. The thermocline set in at around 75°F, and visibility was a bit limited, ranging from 30 to 40 feet. Despite the lower visibility, we managed to spot three hammerhead sharks during the dive, making it a rewarding experience.

Dive 2:
Conditions remained similar on the second dive, with the same thermocline and visibility. The first 15 minutes were relatively quiet, but then the action picked up with a sighting of a school of around 30 hammerheads. Not long after, we were treated to an even more impressive spectacle—over 60 hammerheads emerging from the deep, providing an incredible finale to our dive!

    • Water temperature 82°F

    • Thermocline temperature 75°F,

    • Visibility 30 – 40 ft

    • Over 60 hammerheads!

16TH OCTOBER

Dive 1 – Gordo 2 (Outside):

Our first descent of the day began on the outer bank where despite the murkiness, we had a solitary hammerhead shark made a great pass, it just appeared in front of us while a group of mobula rays danced above the reef.

Dive 2 – Gordo 1 (Inside):

As we descended, the clearer visibility at shallower depths was promising and we could enjoy a school of 25–30 hammerhead sharks circling in synchronised formation, countless tope sharks and a big baitball near the pinnacle, surrounded by a school of yellowfin tunas.

Diving Conditions

 

    • Up to 80 feet in the shallow zone, but it diminished below 40 feet.
    • A refreshing 68°F to 72°F at 100 feet.

    • Around 30 hammerheads
    • Mobula rays
    • Tope sharks
    • Yellow fins tunas

19th October

Dive 1 – Gordo 2 (Outside):

Jellyfish were abundant at the surface, creating a beautiful display for those descending into the cooler depths.

Dive 2 – Gordo 1 (Inside):

Here, marine life took centre stage with a school of around 10 tope sharks. The sight of a large school of jacks and bonito was another highlight, as they swirled together in a coordinated display of life at the banks.

Diving Conditions

 

    • Visibilitiy 45 ft  for the first 50ft dropping to 30 ft from 50ft to 120 ft deep
    • Refreshing 68°F

Wildlife Encounters

 

    • School of around 10 tope sharks 
    • A large school of jacks and bonito

30TH OCTOBER

Dive 1 – Gordo 1 (Inside):

We encountered schools of hammerhead sharks, an exciting highlight of the dive. Large schools of fish, including bonitos too. Visibility was around 30 feet, and the water temperature at the bottom was a comfortable 72°F. We also experienced a thermocline between 40 feet and 80 feet, with the temperature dropping slightly within this depth range. 

Dive 2 

Our second dive was very similar to the first one, offering an incredible opportunity to witness diverse marine life in the area.
